Undyed fabric — colour it exactly how you want

Dyeable fabric is woven but left undyed, usually ivory or off-white, so it can be coloured to any shade you choose. It is the only reliable way to match an existing outfit — a blouse to a saree stitched two years ago, a dupatta to a lehenga, bridesmaids in one exact colour.

What takes dye and what doesn't

Natural and semi-natural fibres take dye well: cotton, silk, viscose organza, chanderi, linen and tussar. Polyester does not, without special disperse dye and heat. Everything on this page is dyeable — that is the whole selection criterion.

Two ways to do it

Dye it yourself. Test on a corner first. Expect 2–4% shrinkage, so buy slightly more than your garment needs.

How much do you need?

Saree blouse 0.8–1.0 m · short kurti 1.5 m · long kurta 2.25–2.5 m · dupatta 2.25–2.5 m, at 44-inch width. Add 10 cm to allow for dyeing shrinkage.
