Chinon: the fabric tailors quietly prefer

Chinon is a lightweight, soft-falling fabric with a faint crinkle texture, usually viscose or a viscose blend. It drapes closer to the body than georgette and is far less slippery than chiffon, which is why tailors like it — it does not fight you on the cutting table.

What it suits

Kurtis, long kurtas, dupattas, layered dresses and anything that should move. Printed chinon is one of the best-value festive fabrics in India: it reads expensive and costs a fraction of silk.

It is semi-sheer, so a full garment usually needs lining.

How much do you need?

Saree blouse 0.8–1.0 m · short kurti 1.5 m · knee-length kurti 1.6–2.0 m · women's long kurta 2.25–2.5 m · dupatta 2.25–2.5 m. All at 44-inch width. Add 10% for a directional print.

Care

Gentle hand wash in cold water, or dry clean. No wringing — squeeze between two towels and dry flat in shade. Iron on low.
