Chanderi: festive without the weight
Chanderi comes from Madhya Pradesh — a fine, slightly sheer weave of silk and cotton with a glossy surface and almost no weight. It is the fabric to choose when you want to look dressed for an occasion and still be comfortable at 34°C.
The chanderis we stock
- Pure chanderi — the classic silk-cotton weave. Glossy, light, slightly transparent.
- Mul chanderi — softer, more cotton in the blend, easier for everyday.
- Tissue chanderi — woven with zari for shine. Festive.
- Chanderi embroidery — thread and sequin work on a chanderi base.
One thing to plan for
Chanderi is semi-sheer. A blouse or kurti made from it will need lining, and that lining is separate fabric — budget another 0.8 m for a blouse. Nobody tells you this and then the tailor calls.
How much do you need?
Saree blouse 0.8–1.0 m · short kurti 1.5 m · long kurta 2.25–2.5 m · dupatta 2.25–2.5 m, at 44-inch width.
Care
Dry clean recommended. Gentle cold hand wash is acceptable if the piece is unlined and unembroidered. Iron on low from the reverse; never directly on zari.
